Empowering Women in Childbirth: Changing Language and Supporting Trauma Survivors

Childbirth is one of the most profound experiences a woman can have. It is a journey that is filled with excitement, anticipation, and even fear. Yet, despite the beauty and power of this experience, the language that surrounds it often leaves women feeling disempowered, ashamed, and fearful.

During pregnancy, medical language can be disempowering for women. Terms like "failure to ovulate," "failure to conceive," "failure of implantation," "incompetent cervix," and "failed early or late pregnancy" can reduce the experience of a series of clinical procedures. The same goes for labor and birth, with terms like "failure to progress," "failure to induce labor," "failure to achieve VBAC or TOLAC," "malpresentation," and "fetal failure to thrive." After childbirth, disempowering language continues with terms like "failure to lactate" and "failure to thrive baby."

These phrases strip away the sacredness of childbirth and turn it into something that is solely clinical and detached. We must recognize the impact of our words and strive to use empowering language that acknowledges the complexity and wonder of childbirth.

It's important to recognize that childbirth is a women-centered experience that is deeply spiritual in nature. It is a time when women connect with their bodies, their babies, and the natural world in a way that is truly transformative. This experience deserves to be honored and celebrated, not reduced to a list of medical procedures.

When women are labeled with terms like "fail," it strips them of their identity and makes them feel ashamed and disempowered. They begin to doubt their bodies and their abilities as mothers. They feel as though they have somehow failed at something that is supposed to come naturally to them.

But the truth is, there is no such thing as a "fail" in childbirth. Every birth is unique and every woman's experience is valid. There are no wrong choices or incorrect outcomes. There are only different paths and unexpected turns.

That's why it's so important to change the way we talk about childbirth. We need to replace the disempowering language with words that are more positive, uplifting, and supportive of women. We need to focus on the emotional and spiritual aspects of this experience, not just the physical.

To empower women in childbirth, especially those who have experienced trauma related to pregnancy loss, miscarriage, emergency c-sections, preterm labor, stillbirth, or neonatal death, we need to provide them with support, resources, and love. We need to give them a safe space to share their stories and experiences without fear of judgment or shame.

We also need to give women the tools they need to make informed decisions about their care. We need to empower them to take an active role in their own health and well-being. We need to provide them with access to information, education, and resources that can help them navigate the complexities of childbirth with confidence and grace.

Ultimately, we need to remember that childbirth is a sacred and transformative experience that deserves to be honored and celebrated. Let's change the way we talk about childbirth and empower women to embrace the power and strength of their own bodies. Let's create a world where women feel empowered, confident, and supported as they embark on this incredible journey of motherhood.

Grace Wang

I am a catalyst for transformation, helping women find the strength and resilience within themselves to embark on a journey of inner healing. My mission is to remind women that childbirth wounds are not their fault, and that they have the power to choose how they live their lives in the aftermath of their experiences. By healing ourselves from the inside out, we can not only improve our own well-being, but also create a positive ripple effect on those around us, including our children and families.

As the founder and CEO of Childbirth Collective, I have created a safe and nurturing space where women can find support in healing from childbirth-related traumas. Through this community, women can rediscover their sense of self and come back home to themselves. We believe in the power of letting go of limiting beliefs that no longer serve us and replacing them with expansive and supportive ones.

Together, we can create a movement of women who are empowered to heal and thrive in the aftermath of their childbirth experiences. I am honored to be a part of this journey with each and every one of you.
